Take part in research

Clinical research plays a significant role in helping improve healthcare and the services provided.
The aim of our research is to find better ways of looking after our patients and keeping people healthy.
We need the evidence from trials to know which treatments work best and compare different approaches to preventing and treating illness and health problems.
Many of our doctors and nurses working across our hospitals play a key part in research and so do our patients. Patient and public participation is vital to help us improve future treatments and our services.

Get involved in research and help us make a difference

In recognition of International Clinical Trials Day, and the importance of promoting patient participation in clinical trials and involvement in research, Barts Health will be hosting a series of activities across all of our sites on Monday 20 May 2013 for patients and members of the public find out about the many different ways to get involved in research:

Find out about current research taking place at your local hospital

On Monday 20 May, we will be holding a series of drop-in information stalls at each of our six hospitals for you to find out more about general research, including trials undertaken within specific disease areas such as stroke or cancer.
Doctors and nurses, as well as patients, researchers and external organisations (including charities) will all be on hand to answer your questions about what research can involve.
Stalls will feature a variety of activities and information for you to take away.

Tour a clinical research centre (pre-registration required)

The Royal London Clinical Research Centre and Centre of the Cell tour

We are delighted to offer our patients and members of the public an opportunity to tour the Clinical Research Centre (CRC) at The Royal London Hospital to find out more about the patient journey and the facilities we have available to make a real difference to research undertaken in the Trust.
In addition, our visitors will also have an opportunity to learn about the amazing world of cells and the human body at the Centre of the Cell - the first science education centre in the world to be located within research laboratories (part of Queen Mary University of London and Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry).

Whipps Cross University Hospital Clinical Research Unit tour

Patient stories: discussion and design a trial workshop (pre-registration required)

On Monday 20 May, we invite you to attend one of our three dedicated patient discussion events - a unique opportunity to hear first-hand from previous clinical trial participants as they share their experiences of participating in trials at Barts Health.
Patient members of current research-related patient panels will also be on hand to talk to you about their experience of being involved and the other opportunities they have had to shape research in the Trust, including steering groups, patient information literature and research protocols and even conducting research alongside academic and medical researchers.
Following the discussions, a short interactive exercise with our expert patients and Dr David Collier, Research Fellow at the William Harvey Research Institute, will explain the steps of designing and conducting your own clinical trial.

Come and hear what other patients have said about being involved in research

Throughout the 20 May, we will be showing videos of patients talking about their experiences of being involved in clinical trials. Visitors will be able to hear real stories from paediatric, diabetes and cardiovascular patients.
The videos (played on a loop) will be available on 20 May from 9am to 5pm at the following drop in locations:
